The Jim Moran Foundation provides critical funding to assist Alzheimer’s patients and their family caregivers.

Alzheimer’s Community Care is pleased to announce that The Jim Moran Foundation has awarded a $30,000 emergency grant to help support the services and resources Alzheimer’s Community Care provides to Alzheimer’s patients and their family caregivers in Palm Beach County.

“During these uncertain times, it is important that we continue to stay on the frontlines for our families,” said Mary Barnes, President & CEO of Alzheimer’s Community Care. “The Jim Moran Foundation has been a long-standing partner and these critically needed funds will go a long way as we look to continue providing dementia-specific care both at our Day Centers and in the community. It is heartwarming to know that the work we are doing for those with Alzheimer’s disease is not forgotten by our supporters. We can’t thank The Jim Moran Foundation enough for all they do.”

The severity of symptoms related to COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted the elderly. According to the CDC, the hospitalization rate for those 65 and over is twice as high as those under the age of 65. When you look at mortality rates, the numbers are just as bleak. Eight of every ten deaths attributed to COVID-19 has been for adults 65 or older.

For patients with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia, the risks of COVID-19 are even greater. Many times, those with dementia are unable to clearly express their needs which may translate to delayed care. Additionally, patients with dementia many times are living with comorbidities that can complicate treatment plans. These unique circumstances present challenges to both families and healthcare providers. Dementia-specific care is needed.

As an essential service, Alzheimer’s Community Care made the decision early on to continue operation of all eleven of our Specialized Day Care Centers, our Family Nurse Consultant program and our ID Locator Bracelet Program to ensure these vital, dementia-specific services were available to all those in need during this time. All CDC recommendations were put into place regarding safety and sanitation, procedures were implemented for social distancing, and all needed personal protective equipment was provided to frontline staff. These efforts have paid off. Alzheimer’s patients are receiving the services they need and Alzheimer’s Community Care has had no reports of COVID-19 among those we serve.
